A deterrent priced as though every recurring trigger were a hidden liability. The trigger fires only when a creature attacks you specifically, and the reward is one point of power shaved away for the turn, which means it neither stops a creature from connecting nor saves meaningful damage against anything bigger than a lone one-power weenie. As a permanent, it commits to the board against ongoing aggression, but the arithmetic never closes: a -1/-0 reduction mattered in an era when red two-drops dealt two and a single point separated a clean trade from a fatal one, and even then it was marginal. What the card really documents is how cautiously green's repeatable, attach-to-the-battlefield defense was costed before the design language loosened up. Green earned its persistent answers, but they were taxed as if each combat trigger had to be repaid several times over. The friction is structural: it wants to be a wall you cast once and forget, yet it gives away so little per attacker that three mana buys almost nothing later combats can't shrug off. The trigger scaling with the number of attackers reads like a virtue on paper, but it nicks each one too gently to bend a single combat step. It survives as a fossil of how early design approached repeatable combat math: a hedge against aggression that hedges almost nothing.
