Brazen Buccaneers

Creature — Human Pirate3 generic manaRed mana

Haste plus explore is the cleanest expression of what the Pirate-tribe red commons were built to do: turn a topdeck into either a land you needed or a creature that hits harder than its printed 2/2. The trigger fires the instant the body arrives, so the explore happens before you ever decide whether to attack, and the haste lets you commit the result to combat the same turn. That sequencing is the whole point. A flip reveals a nonland, the counter sticks, and a 3/3 with haste swings in immediately; a flip reveals a land, you bank the card and send a smaller threat into a board you've already read. Either way the card smooths a curve while applying pressure, which is the design problem explore was created to solve: variance reduction stapled to a creature, paid for by the fact that the upside (a single +1/+1 counter) is modest and one-time. Nothing here is loud. The body is fragile, the counter is small, and the explore reads as marginal in a vacuum. But the timing is exact: a hasty attacker that arrives already knowing whether it grew, in a slot designed for an aggressive tribal shell that wanted bodies and a steady flow of lands in the same draw step.

Haste When this creature enters, it explores. (Reveal the top card of your library. Put that card into your hand if it's a land. Otherwise, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature, then put the card back or put it into your graveyard.)
