Brain Pry
Targeted discard that runs on a guess: name a nonland card, look at the hand, and either rip a copy of that name or, when the name is absent, cantrip instead. Most discard sorts the grip for you. It either takes the best card (Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek) or strips one at random (Hymn to Tourach, Whispers of Emrakul). This hands the decision to the caster, and the failure clause is what keeps the spell from ever being dead air: a discard that says "name a card and discard it" is worthless against a hand that does not hold that name, so a wrong call refunds itself as a draw rather than fizzling. The result reads more like a knowledge check than a removal spell. It rewards a caster who already knows the contents of the hand (because they have seen it, or because they are hunting a specific combo piece they can name on sight) and quietly cantrips for everyone else. The cost baked into the design is precision: it takes only one card matching the name you choose, so it answers a threat you can identify rather than the best unknown card, and it never digs the way a "reveal and choose" effect does. Guess right and you strip the named card from any hand, varied or not; guess wrong and you trade the spell for a card off the top. The whiff is never a punishment, only a smaller payoff.
