Boros Fury-Shield

Instant2 generic manaWhite mana

The fog-with-teeth template, built when the multicolor guild structure was being introduced and white-red was the aggressive pairing that wanted its defensive spells to still point forward. The base effect is a single-creature fog: stop one attacker or blocker from dealing combat damage. What turns it from a tempo-neutral blank into a Boros card is the splash clause, which checks whether red mana actually paid into the cost and, if so, redirects the prevented creature's power back at its controller as direct damage. That makes it a removal-adjacent burn spell only when both halves of the guild show up, a structural nod to the era's experiment with rewarding genuine two-color commitment rather than a mono-white deck splashing for free. The asymmetry matters: it never touches the creature itself (no destruction, no permanent answer), so a large attacker survives to swing again next turn, but its controller eats damage equal to that creature's power in the meantime. The bigger the threat it shields against, the harder it punches the opposing player. That ties its ceiling to the opponent's own aggression, an unusual axis for a prevention spell, and a clean piece of guild-identity design from a period when Wizards was still working out how to make the second color feel earned rather than incidental.
