Legendary Creature — Zombie Wizard3 generic manaBlack manaRed mana

Token-making at five mana with a four-mana activation reads as absurd by any modern standard, and that absurdity is the point of looking at the card now. The design predates Wizards figuring out that repeatable token generation was a load-bearing mechanic rather than a flavor flourish: the activation costs more than most contemporary creatures, the 2/2 frame exists only to carry the tap ability, and the tokens themselves are vanilla 1/1s with no abilities or tribal payoff. Every dial is turned against the engine working. What survives the rate is the concept. A legendary creature whose entire identity is "tap and pay to summon a named demon" prefigures the design pattern Wizards would later make central: the commander built around repeatable token streams, the line from Ophiomancer to Bitterblossom to the Rakdos demon-themed legends that came after. The named token (Minor Demon, with its own card identity rather than a generic creature type) is the flavor move that later sets would refine into cycles of legendary token-makers whose tokens carry the source's character. Read for what it represents, the card is the first sketch of a pattern Wizards spent the next thirty years iterating on: the legend as factory, the activation as resource sink, the token as the real threat.
