Boon of Safety

InstantWhite mana

The older one-mana white protection spells buy a single window and nothing more: Gods Willing and Ranger's Guile school cards resolve, grant their hexproof or their toughness bump, and expire at end of turn whether or not the threat ever arrived. The shield counter refuses that model entirely. It sits on the creature and waits, indifferent to what comes for it: a removal spell, a combat block, a burn spell, a board wipe's destruction (though not its zero-toughness state-based check). One counter, one save, banked until something actually tries to spend it. That patience is the real difference. You can cast this a turn early, on your own turn, before you know which threat is coming, and the protection simply holds until it is needed. The scry pays back the cost of that flexibility, smoothing your draw when the counter proves unnecessary. Where the old guard rewarded reading your opponent correctly at instant speed, this rewards nothing of the sort: it converts a reactive decision into a proactive one, letting you armor a key creature ahead of the threat rather than in response to it. The move from a bluff-and-counterbluff timing exercise to a standing insurance policy is exactly what the shield counter mechanic was built to enable.
