The genius and the cruelty of this card both live in the gap between its two costs. Hard-cast, it is an honest scaling sweeper: pay and the doubled X makes it deliberately expensive, the price you accept for choosing when to wrath. Drawn off the top, the miracle cost collapses that math to , and suddenly the same effect costs roughly half, arriving as a swing nobody could have played around because nobody knew it was coming. Variance, not the caster, dictates the timing, which is exactly what made it feel unfair on the receiving end. Unlike a symmetric Pyroclasm, the targeting confines the damage to one player or planeswalker and only that controller's creatures, so it doubles as a kill spell, a face-damage finisher, and a board sweep in a single sorcery. Miracle as a mechanic was built to manufacture these blowout moments, to make a topdeck feel like lightning from a clear sky, and few cards in the era delivered the blowout as completely as this one: an X-spell that ends games from an empty board, off a card you had no obligation to keep in hand. The information asymmetry is the real cost. You pay full price for control over the moment; you pay half price for the luck of drawing it, and the opponent pays for both.
