Bonethorn Valesk

Creature — Beast4 generic manaRed mana

Morph turned every face-down creature into a question, and a cluster of designs from this era tried to make answering it cost something. This one taxes the unmorph itself: each time any permanent flips face up, anywhere, by any player, it pings a damage. The trigger does not care whose permanent or what kind. Your own morphs flipping for value still feed it, so the engine is symmetrical in source but entirely directed in target: you choose where every point lands. Against a metagame built on face-down creatures, the 4/2 body is almost beside the point; the card taxes an opponent's whole game plan one life at a time, and a busy face-up turn can stack several pings onto a single creature or face. The cost is the body's fragility. Two toughness puts it squarely in burn range against the very color it shares, dies to most spot removal, and trades down in nearly any combat that matters. As hosing-tech it was bound tightly to its moment: a ceiling that existed only while morph saturated the format, a floor that was an overcosted beater the rest of the time. It reads now as a snapshot of how the era kept its signature mechanic honest, not by answering the face-down creatures directly, but by charging admission every time one stood back up.
