Bone Saw

Artifact — Equipment0 generic mana

A free Equipment exists for exactly one reason: artifact count. The +1/+0 it grants is almost incidental, a rounding error on a creature's offense; what the zero cost buys is a permanent that enters the battlefield without ever touching your mana. That makes it fodder for affinity, for metalcraft, for any mechanic that prices itself off the number of artifacts you control rather than what those artifacts do. The equip cost is the honest tax here: the buff is technically reachable for one mana at sorcery speed, but most decks never bother attaching it, because the card already did its job the moment it hit the board for nothing. It sits among the deliberately undercosted artifacts whose stat lines are vestigial: the design is counting permanents, and this is a permanent that costs the floor. Strip away the equip text entirely and you have roughly the same card, which tells you where the design intent actually lives. Cheap, disposable, and worthless on its own merits, it survives because some archetypes care more about how many artifacts you have than how good any single one is.
