The flash is the whole proposition. Plenty of dragons have offered a body plus a damage-dealing enter trigger, but tying that package to instant speed turns a clumsy eight-drop into an ambush: hold up the mana, wait for an attack to declare or a removal spell to point at your board, then flash in a 5/5 flier and rain five damage wherever it does the most work. The divided-damage clause keeps it from being a single-target sledgehammer: split it across a swarm of attackers, finish two creatures and a planeswalker, or dump all five into a face. As a top-end reanimation target the trigger comes along for free no matter how the Dragon arrives, which is why it has long been a favorite payoff for decks that cheat large creatures into play before paying full freight. The price is honest: eight mana for the privilege of holding it up at instant speed, an enormous sum to leave open turn after turn. What you buy with that cost is the freedom to play removal, blocker, and threat from a single card on whichever turn the game finally hands you a window. It is flexible firepower built for the player who would rather react than commit, and the flash keyword is doing every bit of that work.
