The clever bit is the ordering: gain 2 life, then pump based on the total life gained this turn. That "this turn" clause is what turns a mediocre anthem into a payoff. On an empty board with no prior gain, it is a small effect, two life and a +2/+2 swing across your team. But the count is cumulative across the whole turn, so anything that put life into the tally before the attack trigger resolves feeds directly into X: a Soul Warden trigger from a creature that came down earlier, a Wellwisher activation, any pre-combat lifegain the deck was already generating. Timing is everything here, and it cuts both ways. The buff is calculated and locked in during the Declare Attackers step, when the trigger resolves; a lifelink creature swinging alongside it gains its life in the Combat Damage step, which is too late to grow X. So the payoff rewards front-loaded lifegain, not lifegain that arrives with combat. That constraint is what earns the card its slot in green lifegain builds already tracking a running total: it converts a resource the deck accumulates anyway into board-wide power, plus trample to push it through. The body is unremarkable and the effect lasts only until end of turn, so it lives and dies on the shell around it. As a standalone beater it looks slow; as the top end of a lifegain engine, the attack trigger cashes in everything the deck quietly banked before combat.
