The elegance is that the failure case is rarely dead weight. In an Elf deck stocking the yard for Genesis recursion or any reanimation outlet, the "otherwise" clause is not a whiff; it completes the engine. This is a two-mana body whose value scales directly with how concentrated your creature base is around one type, a design language that leaned hard on creature-type identifiers when shared subtypes were a load-bearing deckbuilding lever. The constraint is that you choose the type before you reveal, so no peeking, no hedging. What governs the hit rate is type density, not color count: a five-color Sliver or Dragon deck whose creatures share a type fires reliably, while a mono-green goodstuff pile full of unrelated bodies misses just as often. The activation carries no timing clause, so it sits up through an opponent's end step waiting to fire, turning an idle untap into either a card in hand or a stocked graveyard. That is the tension of the whole design: a self-mill that doubles as card advantage, but only once your deck has done the work of actually being a tribe.
