Two cards of disruption stapled to three points of reach, all for three mana: the math is what made this the signature spell of its era's aggressive midrange decks. Burn and discard rarely live in the same spell because they answer different problems. Burn wants tempo and a kill clock; discard wants to strip the opponent's defenses before they deploy them. This does both at once, and crucially it does the second part on your timing rather than theirs. Hitting a player for three keeps the damage racing toward zero while the forced discard of two cards empties the hand that would have stabilized, so the card attacks both the life total and the resources needed to defend it. The targeting clause is the quietly clever part: aim it at a planeswalker and the walker's controller still loses two cards, which means there is no truly safe way to absorb it. As a piece of color-pie work it sits cleanly in black-red's wheelhouse, the pairing that has always been about trading cards and life for pressure rather than grinding inevitability. The sorcery speed is the honest cost; you cannot hold it up as a trick, so it commits to a proactive game plan and rewards the deck that was already ahead. It generates card advantage while stripping the opponent's, which is precisely why aggressive decks loved having it: every point of life and every card it takes is one fewer turn the opponent has to find an out.
