The drawback that pays for the trick is the mana: the land produces only colorless, so it enters untapped and ready but contributes nothing to your colored requirements. It stays put until the turn you decide to cash it in, so the edict is not a free rider but a deliberate trade of a land drop for a creature off your opponent's board. Against decks that lean on a single threat (a hexproof beater, a lone reanimation target) an edict that hands the opponent the choice is worth more than its mana suggests, since it sidesteps targeting protection entirely.
