Blessed Wind

Setting a life total to a fixed number, rather than gaining or losing some amount, is one of Magic's cleaner design ideas, and this is among the earliest white spells to wield it as pure life restoration. The trick is that "becomes 20" is symmetrical in a way gain effects are not: it ignores how far below twenty you've fallen, snapping a player at three life back to full in a single resolution. Nine mana is the tax for that absolutism, and it is a steep one, the kind of cost that anchors the spell firmly in slow, grinding board states where reaching the back half of the game is the whole plan. Its ceiling is fenced by the same clause that limits it: it targets a player, and "becomes 20" cuts both ways. Used on yourself, it is a reset button. Used on an opponent already above twenty, it is a strange and rarely useful blunt instrument. White had cheaper, more flexible lifegain by the time this printed, and the rate here was never meant to compete with incremental healers; the appeal is the all-or-nothing snap to a known number, a guarantee of exactly where you stand rather than a sum you have to track. It reads as a designer testing how high a life-restoration spell's cost could climb before the effect stopped being worth the mana, and the answer, at nine, lands right at the edge.
