Blazing Effigy

The death trigger reads the damage history of the turn. The body soaks for two mana, and when it dies it pays out 3 plus whatever damage was dealt to it this turn by other sources named Blazing Effigy. Three is the floor; the ceiling is whatever you can route through the chain before the final Effigy resolves on the way out. The card is engineered to be drawn in multiples and sequenced into the same combat step, where one Effigy absorbing damage from another converts that damage into a bigger parting shot. This is a design idiom the game has almost entirely abandoned: the self-referential trigger that cares about other sources by exact name rather than by type, tribe, or shared keyword. Relentless Rats and Shadowborn Apostle inherited the deckbuilding half of the trick (the four-copy restriction lifted) but not the combat-math half; later designs route comparable ideas through counters, token copies, or graveyard accounting because those are easier to parse at the table. The Effigy instead asks players to track damage dealt to a specific creature by specific other creatures during a specific turn, exactly the clerical burden the modern rules team designs around. It is a fossil from when the text could hand the players the bookkeeping and trust them to do it themselves.
