Blasted Landscape

Land

A flooded draw is the oldest tax in Magic: the colorless mana source you stop wanting the moment your manabase is set. Pairing a land's mana ability with cycling answers it cleanly. Early, it enters untapped and gives you a colorless mana that fixes nothing but the count. Late, when one more colorless source is the last thing your hand needs, two mana turns it back into a fresh card. The land is never a dead draw because it has two distinct jobs separated by the stage of the game.

The cost structure is what makes the bargain fair. The colorless mana means this never enables a color you couldn't otherwise produce, so the cycling is paying for itself with the weakest contribution in its cycle: a source with no fixing value at all. That is the design discipline behind the whole set of them. Each cycles for two, and each produces exactly one color (or colorless, here), so the flexibility is bounded by a real opportunity cost rather than given away. Cycling, the mechanic that powers it, debuted in this same era and would go on to define entire archetypes; the cycling-land application is the quiet, structural use of it, the one that smooths a deck's draws without ever asking to be a centerpiece.
