Black Vise

Artifact1 generic mana

The original hand-size tax, and the design template every later "punish a full grip" effect has had to reckon with. The math is brutally simple: deploy it for a single mana, choose an opponent, and turn their opening hand into a clock that scales linearly with the cards they refuse to spend. Against a control deck holding countermagic open, the Vise keeps biting; against a combo deck assembling pieces, it is a tax on patience itself. The structural elegance is in its angle of attack. It does not punish permanents, does not punish a full board, does not care how much life the opponent has banked: it converts the act of holding cards (the resource most decks treat as free) directly into a depleting life total. That conversion is the point, but it is not unanswerable. The damage arrives as a triggered ability on the chosen player's upkeep, which means it goes on the stack and can be played around: in response to the trigger, the chosen player can cast instants to empty their hand below the four-card line, and the ability simply resolves for zero. It does not target, so there is nothing to fizzle for lack of a legal target; X just calculates to zero or less and the Vise deals nothing. And because the damage lands during upkeep, before the draw step, the squeeze is on the cards already in hand rather than the next card drawn: each turn opens with a tax before a fresh card ever arrives. That asymmetry (cheap to set down, expensive to ignore, aimed at a resource decks rarely defend) kept the card cycling through restricted and banned lists across formats for decades, and it forced every later designer working the "hand-size matters" space to grapple with the precedent: Ensnaring Bridge approaches the same number from the defensive side, while Iron Maiden reads as a direct descendant.
