Benthic Biomancer
Adapt was designed as a one-shot: the ability only adds a counter when the creature has none, so on most bodies it fires once and stops. This one turns that built-in limiter into a switch. The trigger loots whenever a counter lands, so for two mana you adapt, put the counter on, and draw-then-discard once. After that the body sits at 2/2 and the adapt line is dead, because the "no counters" clause blocks it. That is where the interaction opens up: pair it with anything that removes the counter (a counter-mover that relocates it, a bounce-and-recast, a reset effect) and the adapt engine reloads, turning a single pump into a repeatable filtering loop. The reason to play it was never the 1/1 body or the incremental toughness; it is the way it converts spare mana into steady card selection while feeding a graveyard for delve, flashback, or reanimation payoffs. It sits in a long line of blue one-drops that ask nothing on the first turn and grind value over a long game, closer in spirit to Merfolk Looter than to any aggressive beater. The design lesson is how a keyword's own restriction can be inverted: adapt's "no counters" gate stops being a ceiling and becomes a trigger that a deck full of counter manipulation flips at will.
