The oldest problem in deck design is the card that's perfect on turn three and worthless on turn seven: kicker existed to solve it, and few commons illustrate the fix as cleanly. Cast it on curve and you get a 2/2 that fills the early game without complaint. Hold it, pay the kicker, and it walks on as a 4/4 first striker that wins most ground combat it enters and trades up against far costlier threats. A single card spanning two distinct slots on the curve, scaling with whatever mana you can spare, was the promise the mechanic sold across its block: fewer flooded hands, fewer dead late draws. The Knight typing and white's longstanding first-strike alignment make the kicked mode read as earned rather than bolted on, the counters and the keyword arriving together as one coherent upgrade. Nothing here is flashy, and nothing was meant to be; this is the dependable baseline a designer points to when explaining what kicker is for, the clean reference point before the splashier cards built to abuse it. The genuine wrinkle is how much the payment reshapes the card's identity: not a pump spell stapled on at instant speed, but a wholesale redefinition of what arrives on the battlefield, decided entirely by how much mana is left over.
