Belbe's Armor

Artifact3 generic mana

The trick is in the swap: minus-X to power, plus-X to toughness, for whatever single payment of mana you can scrape together. That asymmetry turns the artifact into a defensive instrument that scales in two directions at once from a single activation. Point it at your own blocker and you get a wall fattened by the same X that strips away attack value it never needed on defense; point it at an opposing attacker and you blunt the damage while inflating a creature that now soaks up combat it cannot win. Because the boost lives until end of turn and the tap requirement caps you at one use per turn, the math resets each turn, and the conversion is a per-turn tax on combat rather than a permanent rewrite of the board. The X cost sets a natural ceiling: every point of toughness draws on a point of mana, so the size of the swing is bounded by what you can afford in a single moment, and a player tapped out for threats has nothing left to feed it. It belongs to a moment when artifact designers were poking at toughness as a resource worth manipulating directly, before the more familiar +X/+X pump pieces standardized the conversation. The reversed stat line is the whole pitch: a controller's tool for surviving combat math rather than winning it, in an idiom that mostly built artifacts to go the other way.
