Batwing Brume

Instant1 generic manaWhite or Black mana

The hybrid split is the whole design: cast it with white and you get a Fog, cast it with black and you turn the swing back on its attacker. What makes it sharper than a vanilla Fog is who pays for the prevention. The white half blanks an alpha strike at instant speed, but the black half punishes the very thing that makes alpha strikes scary: each player loses one life for every attacker they control, so a wide swing that should have ended the game becomes a self-inflicted drain. Against a creature-flood deck, the black attack crashes into the wall, costs you nothing in board state, and then bleeds the aggressor for committing to combat. Instant timing is the lever. Both modes resolve after attackers are declared, when the opponent has already telegraphed the size of the swing and can no longer back out of it. This is a defensive card that asks the aggressor to second-guess the attack step itself, a different conversation than simply stopping the damage. The "each player" symmetry cuts both ways, but the math favors whoever is sitting back: you typically have few attackers, often none, when you reach for it.
