The combat trick that paid you for missing. A +2/+2 pump for two mana is plain enough that the spell needs a second function to justify a slot, and scry 1 supplies it: even if your opponent declines the bait, doesn't block, or simply has the bigger creature, you walk away having smoothed your next draw. That bottom-of-the-deck option is the whole proposition. A pure pump trick is dead weight the moment combat doesn't materialize the way you wanted; bolting a card-selection rider onto it means the spell is never fully wasted, it just downgrades from a blowout to a cantrip-adjacent dig. The scry also rewards holding it: cast at instant speed in response to a block or an attack, you set up your next turn while resolving the current one, collapsing two decisions into a single window. It is a modest piece of design doing exactly one clever thing, which is hedging variance on a card type that historically asked you to commit blind and hope the attack went through.
