A 1/3 for two mana is a defensive body, the kind of blocker green rarely bothers to attack with. The descend 4 clause rewires it: cross the threshold and it swings as a 4/3, an aggressive rate that arrives without paying more mana, only more time spent filling a graveyard with permanent cards. That conditional is what makes it a card you build toward rather than a card you simply cast. Descend counts permanent cards specifically (lands, creatures, artifacts, enchantments, planeswalkers, battles), not instants and sorceries, so the graveyard you need is one that fetch lands, self-mill, and traded-away creatures build naturally over the course of a game. The design puts the payoff at the front of the curve while gating the payout behind board development, which means the same card reads as a patient early drop and a beater by the midgame. The +3/+0 is static and binary: it either applies or it does not, snapping on the moment the fourth permanent hits the yard and snapping off if something empties it. That fragility is the honest cost of the rate. What it represents is graveyard-as-resource design filtered through green's fair, creature-first lens: not a reanimation engine or a recursion loop, just a body that grows because you have been playing the game, and shrinks if you have not.
