Barrage of Boulders

Sorcery2 generic manaRed mana

A red sweeper priced to clear tokens and mana dorks, the one-damage band keeps this honest in a way most board wipes never have to bother with: it touches only creatures you don't control, so your own dorks and small attackers survive the cast. That asymmetry is the design's whole reason for existing, but the ferocious clause is where the card stops being a mediocre pinger and becomes a finisher. When you already field a creature with power 4 or greater, the same spell that shaved the opponent's defenders also strips their ability to block for the turn, converting a marginal sweeper into a way to push a board of attackers through unimpeded. The two halves reward opposite board states: the damage matters when you're behind on width, the unblockable rider matters when you're ahead on power and just need the door open. It's a clean example of the era's habit of gating a second, sharper effect behind a battlefield condition rather than extra mana, so the card costs the same whether it does the small thing or the big one. The price isn't paid at the register; it's paid earlier, in having committed a large body to the board, a commitment the rest of a ferocious deck already wants to make.
