Barbed Spike

Artifact — Equipment1 generic manaWhite mana

Equipment has always carried a hidden second cost: you pay for the sword, then pay again with a creature to wield it, and losing that carrier leaves the weapon inert until you find another. This design refuses to pay twice. The Thopter arrives already holding the blade, so you spend one card and get a flying 2/1 distributed across two permanents. Trade off the flyer and the exchange curdles for the attacker, because the +1/+0 stays behind on the table, waiting to buff the next thing you play. The equip cost keeps the reattachment honest: the free first attach is the reward, while every subsequent hand-off asks for real mana rather than becoming a repeatable machine. Its ancestry runs through the self-sufficient weapon tradition, from Cranial Plating's dependence on other artifacts to the living-weapon germ tokens that treated sword and carrier as a single card. What sells this one isn't the modest power boost but the evasion: a colorless flyer that leaves a permanent upgrade in its wake does more than a +1/+0 line suggests. None of it is flashy, but the card knows exactly what equipment usually costs and quietly declines to be charged for the wielder.
