Barbed Sextant

Artifact1 generic mana

A one-shot mana filter that replaces itself, which is a more generous deal than the era's color-fixing usually offered. The trick is in the timing of the draw: the replacement card does not enter your hand the moment you crack the artifact, but at the next turn's upkeep, so the body is a delayed cantrip wrapped around a sacrifice-for-mana ability. You pay one to cast it and one more to activate it, sacrificing the artifact to add a mana of any color, and the new card arrives a turn later than it would from a true cantrip. That delay is the friction that prices the fixing as essentially free: you break even on cards rather than netting one, so the artifact is paying you back for the slot, not advancing you. In practice it serves as a splash-enabler for a single off-color spell and a smoothing tool, held until you actually need the color, then converted into a replacement on the way out. This era was full of self-replacing utility artifacts that asked you to absorb a tempo cost in exchange for never feeling like you wasted a card, and the card crystallizes that idea about as cleanly as the period managed. Because the draw is pinned to the next upkeep, the mana and the eventual card are decoupled across turns rather than stacked onto a single point, which makes the activation feel cheap in the moment and the payoff feel automatic later.
