Balduvian Bears

Creature — Bear1 generic manaGreen mana

A 2/2 with no text for one and a green is the "bear" rate: the baseline body every other two-drop is implicitly priced against, the way burn spells get measured against Lightning Bolt. When a designer asks whether a new two-mana creature is undercosted, the question is really whether it beats a bear, and that shorthand exists because cards like this one established the floor. Grizzly Bears named the unit; this one is functionally identical, a green 2/2 vanilla, and the redundancy is the point. The rate is so clean that reprinting it under a second name was not a mistake but a confirmation: two power, two toughness, two mana, no strings, is the honest exchange green is allowed to make. Everything green has done since at two mana, the mana dorks that trade a body for acceleration, the bears with upside that cost a restriction, the 3/2s that trade toughness for reach, departs from this number and pays somewhere for the departure. The card itself does nothing memorable in a game. Its memorability is entirely structural: it is the yardstick, and a yardstick is supposed to be unremarkable.
