Baki's Curse

Sorcery2 generic manaBlue manaBlue mana

A board wipe that only works if creatures have been enchanted with Auras: the damage scales off Auras attached, so a battlefield of vanilla bodies takes nothing at all. That conditional is the whole design, and it dates the card to an era when blue was still being handed sweepers as long as they came chained to a narrow trigger. The premise assumes an Aura-heavy metagame to punish, which is a bet on what the rest of the format is doing rather than a tool you control yourself. Against creatures wearing two or three Auras the math gets lethal in a hurry, but you are paying four mana at sorcery speed for a removal spell whose ceiling lives entirely in the opponent's deckbuilding choices. Most of the time it does nothing, and the times it does something, the opponent has already overcommitted enchantments to creatures you could have answered more directly. It belongs to the school of mid-90s design that built answers to specific strategies into the card pool and trusted the metagame to make them relevant, a philosophy Wizards largely abandoned once it learned that hyper-conditional cards mostly sit in binders. The flavor is clean, the rate is unworkable outside the exact game state it was drawn to punish, and the card stands as a record of how cautiously blue's relationship with mass damage was once handled.
