Bad Moon

Enchantment1 generic manaBlack mana

The original mono-color lord, and the template every tribal anthem since traces back to. It shares Alpha with Crusade, the white version of the same idea, but Bad Moon established the shape that stuck: a two-mana enchantment that pumps every creature of its color, friend and foe alike. The symmetry is the catch that justifies the price. At two mana for a global +1/+1, the card would be obviously underpriced if it only buffed your side; the "black creatures" clause is a deckbuilding tax disguised as a color-pie flavor note, asking you to be the deck that cares more about the anthem than your opponent does. That same Alpha printing already gestured at where the template would head, stapling the buff to tribes instead of colors with Goblin King and Lord of Atlantis. Over the decades the lord template kept narrowing, eventually attaching to keywords as well: the symmetry problem gets easier to solve the narrower the grant. Bad Moon sits at the widest end of that spectrum, which is both why it was printable in 1993 and why Wizards has never quite reprinted its exact effect at its exact rate. It comes from the moment when "all creatures of a color" was a reasonable thing to staple an anthem to, and the design lineage it kicked off is still being mined.
