Backlash

The punisher template at its most literal: the bigger a creature its controller has built, the harder it hits them back, because the damage scales directly with the target's power. That makes it a pointed answer to fatties and lone beaters and much weaker against a board of small tokens or an empty one. The crucial wrinkle is that the creature never leaves the battlefield. It taps, takes no damage itself, and routes its own power back at the player who developed it, a distinction that matters against indestructible threats, regenerators, and anything carrying an on-death trigger you would rather not feed. The targeting clause sets the window: it can only hit an untapped creature, so against a would-be attacker you have to cast it before combat (an already-declared attacker is tapped and out of reach unless it has vigilance). Done in time, the tap denies the swing and bills the controller in their own currency at once. Because it never destroys, exiles, or damages the creature, it sidesteps the usual answers to removal, but it is also impermanent: the target simply untaps next turn and threatens again, so the spell buys a tempo swing and a chunk of life rather than a clean kill. That reliance on the opponent's own overcommitment is the whole charm of the style. It punishes ambition rather than answering it.
