Azure Drake

Creature — Drake3 generic manaBlue mana

The toughness is the load-bearing number. A 2/4 flies over ground stalls, blocks the X/2 and X/3 fliers of its era profitably, and shrugs off the three-damage burn ceiling that defined removal math at the time: the question "does it survive Bolt" was the only one that mattered, and this body answered yes without help. The rate became a blue baseline across the game's early years, the profile Wizards kept returning to whenever they wanted a defensive evasive creature that traded up against red's burn range. The power is deliberately modest; this was never meant to close games quickly, only to hold the air while blue assembled whatever it was assembling. The lineage is long and unbroken: Wind Drake compressed the same idea to three mana with a smaller body, Snapping Drake inverted the stats to a 3/2, and a generation of players have argued about which point on the curve is the right one. The original sits at the patient end of that spectrum, a creature designed for a slower game where the four-mana turn could be spent on a wall with wings rather than a threat.
