Azorius Signet
The Signet cycle solved a problem older fixing artifacts kept getting wrong: how to smooth a two-color mana base without surrendering tempo. The activation is the elegant part. Feed it one generic mana and a tap, and it hands back two colored mana of a fixed guild pair: a net gain of one mana plus the color filtering you actually came for. That gain is small enough that the rock stays priced as fixing rather than acceleration, which is why these endure where flashier-looking accelerants get costed out of existence. A two-cost artifact that simply tapped for two colored mana would be a runaway by historical standards; the requirement that you spend a generic to unlock the output is what keeps it honest, converting mana you already have into the precise white and blue you need on curve. The white-blue configuration aligns it with control's two oldest needs: untapped lands for instant-speed answers, and reliable access to double-color costs. It asks nothing of the rest of the list except the second land the deck was always going to play, and it does its work invisibly: the spells come down on time, the colors are never the bottleneck, and nobody at the table notices the rock that made it possible. That self-effacement is the whole design intent, a colorless filtering tool any Azorius deck can run without building around it.
