Ayula, Queen Among Bears
The joke was that Bears had never been a tribe. For most of the game's history, "bear" was slang for a vanilla 2/2 for two, the developer's yardstick for a fair creature, and the actual Bear creature type was a scattering of forgettable green beaters nobody built around. Then came a lord that retroactively made the pun into a mechanic: each subsequent Bear's arrival forks into piling counters or triggering a fight. The design leans hard on that entering-the-battlefield trigger, which is why the deck it wants is less a pile of literal bears and more an engine of blink and recursion effects that re-trigger the choice, plus creatures that happen to share the type. The fight mode is the sharper half: paired with the counter mode's growth, it lets a board of small green creatures function as repeatable removal, resolving combat outside the combat step and dodging the vulnerability of attacking into open mana. Both modes require another Bear to enter, so the card is a payoff with no engine of its own, which is the discipline that keeps a repeatable removal-and-pump lord from being oppressive. What makes the design memorable is the affectionate archaeology of it: taking the most disrespected creature type in the game, the one that existed only as a measuring stick, and building a tribal payoff around the punchline.
