The triggered ability is the interesting piece. It is a damage-tracking death trigger, which means the card has to remember which creatures it has hit this turn and then check each one as it dies, a bookkeeping shape that almost disappeared from the game after the early sets cleaned up their templating. The payoff is a drain-and-ping, except the damage is redirectable to a player or planeswalker rather than locked onto the dying creature's controller, which is what gives it reach beyond the board. The trample matters for a different reason: it lets the body push excess damage past a blocker rather than being chumped to a standstill, so the giant keeps connecting while the death triggers stack up. Three separate Legends design instincts sit stacked on one frame: the oversized legendary body, the lifegain-on-kill vampire lineage, and the burn-the-face reach that red was just starting to claim as its identity. None of the three is tuned, but the silhouette is unmistakably of its moment, and the card has survived as a curio precisely because nothing since has bothered to revisit the exact combination.
