The clever wrinkle here is that shroud was supposed to be an absolute: a creature with shroud cannot be the target of anything, by anyone, ever. This breaks its own rule on demand. The activated ability hands the keys back, but only to a player you choose, and only until end of turn, which means the body is untargetable to your opponents and your own removal at all times unless you spend mana to open a window. The whole design lives in that lopsidedness: protection from interaction that you can selectively switch off when you want to enchant the creature, pump it, or grant it an attack trigger you actually own. For a card built before "hexproof" existed as a concept, this is a strikingly precise statement of intent, a self-protecting threat that still lets you build around it. The friction is that opening the window costs green mana every turn and lasts only that turn, forcing a choice between safety and synergy rather than handing you both for free. It is also one of the few legends from its era whose mechanical text reads as genuinely thought-through rather than a flavor experiment that happened to print on a creature; the ability is doing real work, drawing the line between an opponent's spell and your own with surgical clarity.
