The clever part of this design is the two-stage threat structure: as long as it survives, every artifact and enchantment your opponents cast costs more, taxing the very permanent types it can also destroy. That tax is not the kill clause; the kill clause is separate and on demand. The result is a piece of interaction that punishes commitment before the fact and then punishes it again after, but only once. The sacrifice is the discipline that balances the rate: a single point of permission to blow up one artifact or enchantment, spent whenever you choose. So the card occupies a strange middle ground between a static cost-raiser and a Disenchant on a delay, and the choice of when to cash it in is the real decision. Leave it untouched, and the tax keeps working while the threat of removal hangs over the table; spend it, and the tax vanishes with it. That tension (one permanent doing the job of two effects, the better half of which only fires once) is what separates it from the strictly-better instants and the strictly-cheaper static taxers that came later. It answers a specific question that artifact-and-enchantment-heavy strategies have always had to respect: how do you both slow the engine down and keep a guaranteed off-switch in your back pocket, on a single card, without overpaying for either half?
