Assimilate Essence
The Mana Leak template with a consolation prize built into the tax. Soft counters have always fought the same losing battle: the escape clause that makes them cheap also makes them worthless in the late game, when the opponent has mana to spare. This one flips that liability into an asset because both outcomes leave you ahead. Counter the spell and you have done your job for two mana. Fail to counter it and you incubate 2, banking a body you can flip on a later turn for
. The trade is a real one: the payoff only triggers when the counter fails, so the card is built to reward you precisely in the scenario where a plain pay-or-die counter would sit dead in hand. The narrowing to creature or battle spells is the price of that generosity, keeping it from being a universal answer while pointing it at two of the card types most likely to be the thing you actually need to stop. The Incubator token is the clever hinge here, a delayed threat that lets a defensive spell double as a source of board presence, so the tempo you spend answering their turn is not tempo you lose on your own.
