Arrogant Vampire

Creature — Vampire3 generic manaBlack manaBlack mana

Five mana for a 4/3 flier reads as overcosted now, but it was priced against a closed environment. The original Portal set stripped black of everything that makes the color what it is elsewhere: no sacrifice synergies, no death triggers, no graveyard recursion, none of the stack interaction that defines competitive play. Within that pared-down rules space, an evasive body could only earn its keep through raw combat math, so the set's flying beaters were costed as finishers rather than role-players. That is the lens this Vampire has to be read through. It was not pricing against the wider card pool that existed in 1997; it was pricing against a box of equally plain cards, where a five-mana flier closed games. The "Arrogant" in the name carries the only flavor on offer, since the rules text supplies none. The card belongs to a design philosophy Wizards has since abandoned: the belief that competitive complexity and beginner accessibility needed entirely separate product lines, before the two were folded back together. Cards like this are artifacts of that experiment, legible only against the constraints of the product they were built for.
