Pacifism told a creature it could not attack or block. This took the next step: it shut off the activated abilities too, closing the loophole that let the best creatures shrug off a tap-down by pumping themselves, drawing from a tap ability, or sacrificing for value before the white player got anything out of the deal. That second clause is what made the card a genuine answer rather than a half-measure. A creature wearing Pacifism can still fight, ping, or tap for an effect that turns the corner; under this, even a creature whose whole value lives in its buttons sits inert, a body that exists only to be enchanted. The cost of that completeness is the cost every aura pays: it is a two-for-one waiting to happen, vulnerable to enchantment removal, bounce, blink, and any sacrifice outlet that turns the threat into a card disadvantage you ate for three mana. White has chased the same job through many printings since, each tuning the balance between the aura's thoroughness and its fragility, but the template here became the reference point: lock the body down, lock the buttons down, accept that you are spending a card to do it. For a long stretch it was the default white removal proxy in any environment without real destruction, the spell you reached for when the format gave white nothing better than telling a creature to stand still and keep its hands in its pockets.
