Argivian Phalanx

Creature — Human Kor Soldier5 generic manaWhite mana

Affinity almost always meant artifacts: the mechanic that once warped a format around cheap metal creatures and counted permanents you'd already committed. Grafting it onto creatures instead is the wrinkle here, and it changes what kind of deck the card asks for. A go-wide white deck full of tokens and small bodies is exactly the fuel this wants, since every creature you already control (token or otherwise) shaves a mana off the cost, and it pays you back with a 4/4 that can land for as little as a single white mana once the board is developed. The vigilance is what makes that math matter: the payoff creature that arrives on the back of your other attackers also stays back to hold the ground you've taken, so it never asks you to choose between pressing the assault and keeping a blocker. The tension the design resolves is timing. A six-mana body is too slow for an aggressive white deck, but affinity collapses the cost right when the deck peaks, turning a top-end anchor into a curve-topper that lands ahead of schedule. It's a clean demonstration that affinity was never really about artifacts; it's about counting the board state you've built, and creatures are a resource white is happy to count.
