Argivian Archaeologist

Creature — Human Artificer1 generic manaWhite manaWhite mana

A 1/1 for three mana that taps and pays White manaWhite mana more to do its job: the rate is brutal by modern standards, and that is precisely the point. The set that built itself around artifacts also taught Wizards how dangerous artifact recursion could be, and the Archaeologist is white's answer to that problem, framed as a tool rather than an engine. The activation cost is heavy and the body is fragile, so each rebuy is a deliberate, expensive commitment even though the tap ability can fire at instant speed. What makes the design hold up as a primary source is the color-pie staking. Putting artifact recursion in white, gated behind a double-white activation on a human artificer, established a lane that white has revisited periodically (Auriok Salvagers being the cleanest descendant) whenever the design team wants a controlled, repeatable artifact loop without handing it to green or black. The card also sits near the headwaters of the artificer creature type itself, predating the subtype's formalization and receiving it retroactively. Read it as an early attempt to give white a structural role in artifact-centric play that did not amount to simply blowing them up: the question of how much repeatable recursion white should hold, and at what tax, starts here.
