Arena of the Ancients

Three mana to lock down every legendary creature on the battlefield, on both sides, until something forces them to untap. The design is a hate card built for creatures that barely existed yet: the set that introduced legendary creatures as a card type also printed the artifact that hosed them, a self-cancelling design philosophy the era specialized in. The shape is worth dwelling on. The enters trigger does the initial sweep, and the static ability prevents the untap step from cleaning it up, so the lock holds until a player finds an untap effect, a bounce spell, or removal for the artifact itself. That makes it functionally a permanent Twiddle on every legend in play, a soft-lock priced like a Storage Matrix that only cares about the most expensive creatures in the room. The collateral damage clause (it hits your legends too) is the discipline that justifies the rate, and it shapes every deck that wants to use the card: either you run no legendary creatures of your own, or you bring untap effects to break parity. Reanimating it, blinking it, or bouncing and recasting it all reset the enters trigger, the wrinkle that has kept the card from being purely a relic. A narrow answer card from a set where narrow answer cards were the texture of the game.
