Arclight Phoenix

Creature — Phoenix3 generic manaRed mana

The recursion clause rewrote what a creature is supposed to be: not a body you cast and protect, but a payoff that lives in the graveyard and asks your deck to do something it already wanted to do. A spell-heavy red deck wants to chain cantrips and burn anyway; the phoenix turns that chain into a free hasty flier, checking at the beginning of your combat step and returning if you've fired off three instants and sorceries that turn, with no mana spent to reanimate it. The three-spell threshold is the price, and it is a real one. It demands a deck built almost entirely around cheap instants and sorceries, which is why this card anchored an archetype of one-mana spells and self-mill card selection rather than slotting into an existing shell. The deeper inversion is that the phoenix never needs to be cast from your hand at all: discard it, mill it, pitch it to a draw spell, and it comes back the same way. That breaks normal card economy. A 3/2 flier with haste for four mana is a fair rate; a 3/2 flier with haste that costs zero mana to return every turn you hit the count, in multiples when you run several copies, is a recurring clock that punishes any opponent who cannot interact with the graveyard or race it. The whole card is a bet that your deck can reliably reach three spells before combat, and that the returns will stack faster than the answers.
