Archaeological Dig

Land

Fixing has always come with a tax, and this land states its bill plainly: it produces colorless mana freely, but the moment you need a color, the land itself goes away. That trade is the whole ledger. Most fixing of its era either tapped for a color every turn (the painlands, the original duals) or charged life or tempo for the privilege. This one charges a permanent: it is a fetchland for mana rather than for lands, a one-shot Lotus Petal stapled onto something that at least sits in play and taps for colorless while you wait. The design fits a mostly one- or two-color deck reaching for a single splash spell without warping its land count: hold the Dig, let it filter colorless into your ramp or curve, then cash it for the exact pip the splash demands and accept the lost land drop as the cost of having had it at all. The friction is that you only get one color from it, ever, so it rewards decks that need fixing in narrow bursts rather than turn after turn. A card built for the multicolor crucible it came out of, where the question was never whether you could find a color but how many permanents you were willing to spend to find the right one.
