That is a coherent "defenders matter" axis built decades before the mechanic was ever printed, which is exactly why Wizards eventually rebuilt the idea from scratch as Arcades, the Strategist: a cheaper Bant flier on a card-draw frame that converts toughness into offense, finishing the thought this prototype could only gesture at. The toughness anthem here only fortifies; it never turns that wall into a clock, and that gap is the upgrade the retrain delivered a generation later.

The upkeep tax is what kept the original a footnote: a flat every turn, a fixed payment rather than the escalating cumulative cost Legends also experimented with on other cards. The rate looks honest on paper, but standing commitment on top of an eight-mana cast is precisely the kind of recurring obligation competitive play has long since priced out. The white pump activation is vestigial, a color-coded mana sink stapled onto each of the five Elder Dragons of the era more out of pattern than purpose. What endures is the shape, not the math: a flier that turns your blockers into a fortress while threatening lethal in the air. The mechanic was here first; it just had to wait for the rules text, and the costing, to catch up.
