The trigger is the whole engine, and it is deliberately picky about what feeds it. Tokens and mundane creatures do nothing here: the drain fires only on nontoken historic permanents, meaning artifacts, other legendaries, and Sagas. That constraint is what turns a two-mana 2/2 into a payoff for a deck that would otherwise look artifact-heavy and slow. Every equipment, every legendary body, every enchantment-Saga you cast or blink becomes a ping and a life swing, so the card rewards a build stacked with permanents that already earn their keep and taxes the opponent a point at a time for the privilege of playing them. The design leans on breadth rather than a single loop: no one trigger matters much, but a board that reliably deploys historic permanents across a game grinds the drain into a real clock. Read as a piece of Boros construction, it is unusual in what it asks for. Red-white aggro typically wants cheap creatures and reach; this instead points toward artifacts and legends, the kind of value shell those colors do not usually anchor, and pays you incrementally for committing to it. The self-gain is small enough that it never reads as a lifegain card; it is a hedge that keeps you afloat while the damage half does the closing.
