Aquamoeba

Creature — Elemental Beast1 generic manaBlue mana

The discard is the engine; the body is the vessel. A 1/3 that flips to a 3/1 and back at will is a useful enough piece of combat math (block on the way in, attack on the way out, pay nothing but cards), but the swap is incidental to what this creature was built to do. Each activation pitches a card, and a deck full of madness and threshold and flashback wants nothing more than a creature begging to discard at no mana cost. That is the real work: a beater that doubles as a no-cost engine for graveyard-hungry archetypes, turning hand cards into yard cards on demand, cashing the pitched card back into play through madness or banking it toward threshold. The price is paid entirely in cardboard, which is the only thing stopping the ability from looping forever: a 1/3 that pings out free swaps would be unremarkable, but one that converts hand into graveyard with every flip is a fueling station with a clock attached. What makes the design tidy is the answer it gives to a specific design question, namely how to hand a graveyard deck a creature that actively wants to throw cards away rather than one that merely permits it. Most discard outlets of the era charged mana or sat passively; this one is a body that swings and stocks the yard in the same breath, with the empty hand as its only governor.
