Apprentice Wizard

Creature — Human Wizard1 generic manaBlue manaBlue mana

The earliest mana accelerator that fixed nothing: feed it one blue and a tap, and it returns three colorless, a net gain of two that converts blue into raw, color-agnostic mana. That exchange puts the card squarely in the lineage of acceleration that bends color rather than producing it: you do not get more blue, you get more total mana pointed at spells that do not care what color pays for them. The 0/1 frame is the honest tax. It will not block, will not attack, and dies to anything that glances at it, so it earns its keep only when an expensive generic-cost payoff is already waiting. As a piece of design history it reads as Wizards probing where to draw the line on net-positive mana from a creature, well before the templating language for "Add" effects settled and before colorless even had its own mana symbol (the modern oracle wording cleaned that up retroactively). The result is more interesting as an artifact of how early sets thought about ramp than as a card anyone reaches for now: a Wizard built to launder blue into bulk on the turns you have something worth bulking toward.
