Apprentice Sorcerer

Creature — Human Wizard Sorcerer2 generic manaBlue mana

Untap, point, ping, attack: that is the entire range of motion here, and it was engineered to be exactly that small. The tap-to-ping effect is the family Prodigal Sorcerer founded, and the body and damage match it; what got changed is the window. The ability fires only when you are the active player, and only before attackers are declared, which fences off every line that makes a pinger tricky to teach. No tapping it on the opponent's turn to snipe an incoming attacker. No instant-speed response. No holding it up as a deterrent and forcing the table to play around it. Those are the interactions that demand a player understand priority and the stack, and the Portal-era teaching sets were built to keep those concepts out of a beginner's hands for as long as possible. So the friction that reads as a strange downside in a modern frame was the whole point: a Prodigal Sorcerer with the confusing parts sanded off, a damage source you can use one way and explain in a single sentence. It survives as an artifact of that pedagogy, the same effect every Tim before and since offers, restricted to the pre-attack turn a new player already understood.
